Whether you're going away for 1 week, 15 days, or 3 weeks, it's always the same problem: you always pack too many clothes. It's normal, we all do it! But if this summer you want to travel light or simply in an optimized way, we'll reveal a very simple technique to optimize the space in your luggage. No more taking 10 dresses and as many pairs of shoes, your suitcase will thank you!
What is the 3-3-3 rule?
The 3-3-3 rule is very simple: it consists of only taking:
- 3 tops
- 3 stockings
- 3 pairs of shoes
If you follow this rule, you 'll leave for 1 week with only these items in your suitcase. Once you've selected these 3 items from these 3 categories, you'll need to mix and match them together. A dozen or more outfits with only 9 pieces! Incredible, right?
The secret to creating stunning looks with so few pieces is to stick to similar shades and play around one or two main patterns. Then, to brighten up your look, you can go all out with accessories: scarves, sunglasses, belts, jewelry, etc.
The concept is therefore very simple and takes up this idea of the "capsule wardrobe" which invites you to do better but with less. It's the opportunity to mix certain pieces that you would not have thought of combining and to create totally different looks from one day to the next! Have fun, it's the opportunity more than ever, especially in summer ;)
What to pack for 1 week following this rule?
The 3-3-3 rule works for a one-week vacation; if you're going away for longer, you can double the quantities, for example, to 6-6-3. We'll show you how to pack your suitcase using this method and focusing on a central print. Take leopard print, for example, which is very trendy this season.
We're going to organize the suitcase around leopard, which is a rather warm pattern with camel, black, white, and beige. It's a perfect pattern for warm seasons like spring and summer. If you prefer cool colors and whether you're a summer or winter fan, you can just as easily go for a polka dot, striped, or floral print, depending on your tastes!
Selection of the 3 tops
To choose your tops, it's essential to consider your destination and the length of your trip. We recommend choosing versatile, easy-to-match pieces. They won't necessarily be worn together, of course, but to maintain consistency, we recommend choosing similar shades or variations of the same pattern.
- A light and basic t-shirt: Choose a cotton t-shirt in a neutral color like white, gray or black or a camel that will go very well with our leopard print.
- A shirt: for summer, we recommend choosing a light shirt, made of linen or cotton. It will go well with shorts, pants, or even a satin skirt! You can wear it closed for a slightly dressed-up look, open over a swimsuit or t-shirt for a casual look, or tucked into a skirt or pants for a very pretty casual chic look.
- A patterned top (a slightly dressy one, if possible): this is the perfect opportunity to add a touch of fun and color to your vacation wardrobe. Here, we recommend going for a leopard top like our Becky bustier top.
Choice of 3 bottoms
When choosing bottoms, try to consider the activities you plan to do during your vacation. If you're more into hiking than beach days, then opt for breathable materials and, if possible, long pants rather than shorts or lightweight skirts.
To stay in line with our "leopard" theme, we recommend choosing materials that will complement your tops. If you've only opted for linen and crochet for your tops, forget satin and velvet, and opt for denim, cotton, or linen.
- Pants: Lightweight, comfortable pants are essential. Opt for chinos or jeans, which can be worn both during the day and in the evening. Again, neutral colors like beige, white, or black will be very easy to match with our print. You can even opt for one of our ultra-comfortable leopard pants !
- Shorts: These are the perfect piece for warmer weather and relaxing days. Choose denim or cotton shorts, crochet or even satin, but always keep in mind the overall look of your wardrobe.
- A skirt: Skirts can be worn with a T-shirt for a casual look or with a shirt for a more formal outfit. Choose a skirt with a flattering cut and a color or pattern that pairs well with your tops.
Feel free to adapt your selection based on your tastes, desires, and habits. For example, if you only wear skirts or shorts, bring three pairs of shorts with you. The important thing is that you feel comfortable in them and can create looks that reflect your personality.
Selection of 3 pairs of shoes
When it comes to footwear, choose yours based on your activities and destination. Again, if you're more into hiking than cultural visits and beach trips, you'll have a completely different selection. It's best to choose three pairs for three occasions or to stick with only highly versatile pairs.
- Open shoes or sandals: For hot days and trips to the beach or pool, these are essential to keep you cool. Depending on the theme of your wardrobe, you can choose them in canvas, leather, rope, etc.
- Sneakers or dress shoes: A nice pair of sneakers that match the main colors in your wardrobe or simply in neutral tones is a must-have. If you're planning to visit cultural sites, walk around the city, or go shopping, these are the foundation of your look.
- Dress shoes: If you have evenings or outings planned at your vacation spot, don't hesitate to bring a pair of pumps or heeled sandals to complete your looks. It's also important that you feel comfortable in them.
So there's no need to pack four or five pairs: think 1 pair = 1 use / 1 context. Discover our selection of trendy shoes for summer.
Our tips for creating your looks
Once you've chosen the pieces you're bringing with you, you'll need to mix and match them. Here are some tips for creating your looks using the 3-3-3 method:
- Layer: Don't be afraid to layer and mix and match. For a basic pair of shorts and a t-shirt, you can create a casual look by adding an open shirt and sandals, or an old-money look with a sweater tied around the shoulders and dress shoes.
- Multiply the combinations: to choose your pieces well , each piece from 1 category must go well with the 3 pieces from the other 2. Let's take the example of the basic t-shirt: it must go well with all the bottoms and with all the shoes. The same goes for the shirt which must go with all the bottoms and shoes. If this is the case, you have chosen your items well and you will be able to have fun!
- Accessorize: An outfit isn't complete until it has accessories! Especially when you're packing a few items, remember to choose your accessories wisely. Belts, scarves, jewelry, and sunglasses are essential. Don't hesitate to belt all your looks, play with jewelry , handbags, and other clutches.
In addition to the 3 tops, 3 bottoms, and 3 shoes, you can also bring a dress or jumpsuit if you wish. The goal here isn't to restrict or deprive you, but to teach you to only bring what you need.
Our tips for fitting everything into your suitcase
Once you have your wardrobe ready to go, here are some tips to further optimize the space in your suitcase:
- Roll your clothes instead of folding them, they will take up much less space once in your suitcase!
- Choose materials that don't wrinkle so you don't have to carry a steamer.
- Carry the largest items with you, but if you cannot carry these items, you can use decompression bags to save space.
- Use the pockets of your clothes by slipping small objects like jewelry or belts into them.
- Always remember to bring a tote bag with you. You can use it to go to the beach or to store your dirty laundry; it's always practical!
- Choose travel-sized beauty products. Instead of carrying the entire bottle of shampoo or shower gel, transfer only the amount you need into a carry-on bottle (less than 100ml).
- Maximize small spaces. Once you've managed to fit all your clothes and shoes in, there will be a few gaps where you can slip in extra pairs of socks, a charger, a game book, etc.
With these simple tips, you'll never pay extra baggage fees again!
