With the start of the school year, summer is coming to an end, and our wardrobes are transforming to welcome fall. It's hard not to feel nostalgic for those little summer dresses and skirts when we have to reconnect with sweaters and tights.
How can you navigate this transition and still wear lightweight clothing? Here are five simple tips for transitioning from summer to fall in style.
Tip #1 - Swap your sandals for loafers or ballet flats
Sandals, perfect for summer, can become too light when the chill of autumn sets in. For back-to-school, we recommend replacing them with semi-closed shoes instead of closed-toe ones. Here are three types of shoes we recommend opting for:
- Loafers: These shoes add a chic and slightly masculine style. They're ideal with straight-leg jeans, cigarette pants, or even a schoolgirl skirt. Colors to favor this fall are burgundy, brown, beige, and black.- Ballet flats or Mary Janes: Super feminine, ballet flats are a great option for transitioning from summer to fall. They pair well with midi dresses, skirts, or fitted pants. We recommend opting for leather or suede ballet flats, or even Mary Janes with details like buckles or bows.
- Converse: Lighter than sneakers, Converse are perfect for fall thanks to their lightweight canvas material. They'll add a schoolgirl touch to your back-to-school looks. Don't hesitate to have fun with colors and patterns.
Tip #2 - Layer up to cope with temperature changes
The changing seasons often mean changeable and unstable weather, and autumn is no exception.
To face these changes in style, we advise you to adopt the "layering" or "onion" trend:
1 - A linen or cotton t-shirt, or even a summer tank top with pretty details.
2 - A long-sleeved t-shirt or a light blouse, the kind you wore in the summer evenings.
3 - A lightweight button-up vest or a small bomber jacket. The short trench coat is also very trendy this year.
For the bottom, you can wear jeans or flared pants, for example. For materials, choose cotton or linen, two natural materials that are neither too warm nor too breathable.
Tip #3 - Swap your raffia bag for a leather or suede bag
In summer, whether on vacation or at the office, we don't necessarily want to carry heavy, hot tote bags for the high temperatures. Instead, swap them for linen or raffia bags , such as tote bags or baskets.
This back-to-school season, ditch the lightweight bags and embrace your favorite tote bags. Here are our favorites to adopt this year:
- Woven leather bags, the braiding has the particularity of recalling the texture of raffia baskets that we wear in the summer, while being more sophisticated. Generally available in dark colors, perfect for fall, it will dress up any outfit.
- Soft tote bags: For those seeking both style and functionality, soft leather tote bags are ideal. They offer ample space to carry your personal and professional belongings while remaining elegant. Their simplicity and flexibility will allow for a smooth transition from summer to fall.
- Half-moon bags, generally small in size, are worn across the body or over the shoulder. Choose them in leather and neutral colors for a chic and modern look.
- The suede bag is the perfect bag to extend the sweetness of summer. Known for its soft texture and suppleness, suede is perfect for autumn days. It offers a stylish alternative to stiff leather styles and adds a touch of casual luxury to your outfits.
Tip #4 - Reveal your legs but cover your upper body
The contrast between bare legs and a covered top creates a visual balance that's perfect for fall. When the weather still allows for skirts or shorts, but it's cooler in the morning on the way to the office, it's a good time to experiment with semi-dressy outfits. Here's how to show off your legs while still covering your upper body:
- On the bottom: You can continue to wear short skirts , dresses or shorts, but opt for heavier fabrics like denim, leather or wool.
- On top: You can compensate by covering your shoulders with loose sweaters, oversized blazers , or thicker bomber jackets. These pieces add volume and warmth, while creating a balanced look.
Our ideas held:
- The mini skirt with a vest with large buttons and a collared blouse
- The short or midi dress belted with a short trench coat
- Faux leather shorts with an oversized blazer and a simple t-shirt
Don't be afraid to experiment with different combinations of pieces and mix and match materials. The end of summer doesn't necessarily mean you have to stop having fun with fashion ;)
Tip #5 - Dare to wear sleeveless sweaters
The sleeveless sweater, long considered retro, is back in a big way this fall. It's a great option for transitional days when it's still too warm for a thick sweater, but cool enough to layer up.
You can wear them over short-sleeved and long-sleeved t-shirts, or over shirts for a semi-professional, semi-casual look. Over a blouse with a pretty collar, you'll create a romantic and feminine look.
The combination possibilities are endless and can be adapted to your personal style. Discover our mid-season sweaters right here .
